Researchers
Running and operating as a satellite of the Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility Manchester, our paediatric unit is resourced to undertake studies across all areas of paediatrics and child health. Our special focus is on the testing of new medicinal products and complex experimental medicine studies.
We provide excellent facilities in which high quality clinical research can be performed safely and effectively by our highly skilled personnel in accordance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
We support patient focused clinical research. The facility has been specifically set up for studies where paediatric participants of all ages require either the administration of a complex medical therapy, the administration of a drug followed by complex intervention (for example a multiple point pharmacokinetic study), or for prolonged visits requiring intensive investigation or observation.
Whilst the majority of the work that we undertake is day-case, the facility is open 24 hours a day for studies where an overnight stay is required. We have access to all of the state of the art equipment and resources of the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, meaning that we can carry out even the most complex clinical trials and children can take part in our studies alongside their ongoing treatment.
A researcher's view
"We have been working with the Children's Clinical Research Facility since November 2009, and have found the team to be professional and helpful at every turn. The unique placement of the facility in the heart of the new children's hospital has allowed us to take on more complex, exciting research studies than we would have been able to do in the past.
"The ability to have a dedicated research area which allows for inpatient and outpatient work without pressure on clinic space and beds has been invaluable. The professionalism of the team assisting with the set up and conduct of studies has greatly enhanced the experience of doing research in the NHS."

A pharmaceutical industry view
"Congratulations on your first screened subject! This is excellent news and I can confirm that this is the first screened subject globally. As well as this being a major achievement for the Wellcome Trust Children's CRF and the Medicines for Children Research Network, this is Takeda's first global paediatric trial of which your team has achieved the first subject screened, with their imminent enrolment!
"Your team have proved that the UK is capable of leading subject recruitment and achieving that first subject screened. Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm for this study, please also send Takeda's thanks to your dedicated study team."
